This issue is a bit scarcer than the proofs of 1879-83, but it is not truly rare. A fair number of gems have been certified, but the vast majority of proof 1886 half dollars fall short of the mark. Generations of mishandling and clumsy cleaning are to account for this attrition. Cameo proofs are also available, but Ultra Cameo proofs are exceedingly rare. Typical of proof coinage, the majority (400) of these pieces were struck in the first quarter of the year. Subsequent quarterly deliveries were of 155, 110 and 221 proofs. In an unusual circumstance, all of these were sold, with no indication of unsold remainders being melted. Walter Breen reported two die marriages, indicating that the second of these was employed for coining the currency strikes after the dies had clashed. These non-proofs typically were coined during the final quarter of the year to meet the demand for holiday gift presentations. There would be no demand for additional half dollars in general circulation until 1891, when the Treasury finally drew down its huge reserve of half dollars from earlier years.Leer más
