Though the production of silver dollars rose this year from the small issues of 1801-02, it's evident that a certain percentage of the dies used in 1803 were dated 1802 or 1802/1. The 1803-dated dollars were coined into early 1804, resulting in the phantom figure for that year which many early numismatists used to justify the existence of the very rare 1804 silver dollars. It would be more than a century before those coins were determined to be products of 1834 and later. This date is not rare in circulated condition, with many survivors grading F through XF. Mint State pieces are less available than for preceding dates, with gems being all but unknown. The coins were well made, given the technology available, and they tend to be sharper than most of the smaller silver pieces of that period. This didn't save them from being shipped overseas as just so much bullion, and many were lost to the melting pot. Each of the obverse dies used this year is unique to its die marriage. Four feature a Small 3, while two display a Large 3. These terms are a bit misleading, as the actual numeral sizes are fairly close. A more meaningful distinction would be Plain 3 and Serif 3, but the hobby has inherited a lot of names that survive more through sentiment than accuracy. Of the various die marriages, BB-253 appears to be a phantom that no one today can confirm to exist, while BB-256 is quite scarce and seldom encountered.
