The number of proofs sold in 1873 was smaller than one would expect for a first-year-of-issue coin type. Certainly a contributing factor was that these coins weren't struck until July, long after established coin collectors had ordered their annual proof sets. The trade dollar was sold as part of the silver proof set beginning that month, and for those who'd already purchased their sets trade dollars could be acquired separately at $1.50 in silver coin or $1.75 in paper money. This discrepancy reflected the fact that greenbacks were not as yet equal to silver coins of the same face value. Most surviving proofs of this date are in the lower grades, with gems being quite rare. It appears that many 1873 proofs were spent, as lightly circulated examples are known. A modest number of proofs have been certified as Cameo, but Ultra Cameo coins may not exist. This date is the rarest entry in the series of proof trade dollars, aside from the mysterious 1884 and 1885 editions.Leer más
