1874 was the first full year of trade dollar production, and the Philadelphia Mint contributed nearly a million pieces. Nearly all of these were struck early in the year, after which time production slowed and then stopped after that summer. This proved to be Philadelphia's second highest mintage for the series. One would expect this issue to be relatively common in circulated grades, but most of these coins did get shipped to ports in China and Southeast Asia. Few ever came back, and most of those that did had suffered damage and/or chop marks. Mint State pieces are fairly scarce, with gems being genuinely rare. Some unworn coins are marred by chop marks, too, though the collecting of these has become more popular in recent years. The legends on the reverse hub suffered some chipping away of serifs and other delicate lines. Trade dollars of this and other early dates are often seen with these features restored to the working dies using hand tools.Leer más
