1874 witnessed the first full-year of trade dollar production from the San Francisco Mint, which moved into its new and greatly enlarged facility that same year. The more than 2-1/2 million 1874-S trade dollars mostly mad their way to the Far East as intended, and those that returned decades later were almost all worn and/or chop-marked. While examples are not rare in the lower Mint State grades, gems are extremely rare. Most are also less than fully struck, with weakness being fairly typical at Liberty's head and the eagle's left (viewer's right) leg. These design elements are directly opposed from obverse to reverse, and the die cavities did not fill completely. There are no major varieties for this issue, but the large number of dies employed led to the unintentional use of three different mintmark punches. The Micro S variety is the most difficult to find.Leer más
