It was never intended that the Philadelphia Mint would coin large numbers of trade dollars, as their intended market was a much more direct journey from the San Francisco Mint. Still, a moderate coinage occurred at Philly in 1875. Both circulated and Mint State coins are rather scarce, though the percentage of gems seems to be higher than for branch mint coins of the period. A new reverse hub was created mid-year to address concerns about the trade dollar's striking quality. This issue was raised by Philadelphia Mint Chief Coiner A. Loudon Snowden, so William Barber revised his design with a slightly lower relief. The new reverse is most easily spotted by the lack of an olive bud protruding within the eagle's sinister (viewer's right) claw. The old, or Type I reverse is noticeably more scarce than the replacement hub, and both hubs would continue to appear for 1876's production. Careful study of trade dollars reveals that the tall lettering of the reverse was subject to chipping on the hub. Sometimes the dies were left with these flaws, but in other instances an engraver cut in the missing portions, and these recurring flaws provided another impetus for creating a new hub.Leer más
