Introducción de monedas

Though trade dollars had by this time become a nuisance in domestic circulation, it appears that the greater part of this issue's huge mintage did indeed get shipped to the Far East. Many of these coins were quickly melted and then cast into bars, while others became the source of silver for jewelry pieces. This was particularly true in India, which became the ultimate destination of many trade dollars received in the seaports of China and Southeast Asia.

With its enormous mintage, this is far and away the most common of trade dollars in all grades. Circulated pieces are plentiful right through the About Uncirculated level. Mint State coins of so-so quality are easily found, with choice examples certified as MS-63 and MS-64 being available to the series specialist or type collector. As with all trade dollars, true gems are rare and seldom offered. It appears that almost no one sought these coins by date and mint until well into the 20th Century. Even today the trade dollar series remains neglected.

There are three mintmark sizes/style known. The Micro S is sought by specialists for its scarcity, while the Medium S and Large S coins are plentiful enough to not carry any premium. Popular varieties include a repunched date (FS-301) and two doubled-die reverse varieties (FS-801, -802).
