Without the added exposure of 1876's centennial exposition, sales of proof coins fell this year to a level that better reflects the number of serious collectors at the time. Some have challenged the very low figure of 510 proofs found in most reference books, citing a production of 200 pieces struck early in the year that may or may not have been proofs. In his 1993 encyclopedia of silver dollars, Q. David Bowers utilized a figure of 710 proofs, though acknowledging that this was uncertain. In any case, the availability of proofs for this date is comparable to other entries in the series to that point, aside from the unusual 1876 entry and the later, proof-only coins. Cameo examples are available to the advanced collector, but ones certified as Ultra Cameo are extremely rare. All 1877 proof trade dollars features dies taken from the newer obverse and reverse hubs created in 1876 and 1875, respectively.Leer más
