The coining of trade dollars was suspended February 22, 1878 by order of Treasury Secretary John Sherman. This measure had been anticipated at the Philadelphia Mint, and it held off coining any pieces until after that suspension was in place. Both the Carson City and San Francisco Mints, however, had standing orders to fill before they could comply. Philadelphia did strike proofs later in the year, as these coins would not be entering circulation and thus did not further the nuisance Sherman was attempting to end. Knowledge that trade dollars would no longer be produced on demand seems to have prompted a small boost in proof sales from previous years (excepting, of course, 1876). This date is more available than most earlier entries both in terms of overall numbers and the number of certified gems. Cameo pieces are likewise a bit more available, though Ultra Cameo coins remain extremely rare.Leer más
