The production of cents at San Francisco in 1945 fell by 100 million pieces from 1944, and this was due to the previous year's success in supplanting the despised steel cents. The coining of cents was actually suspended at San Francisco from August 1944 through March 1945, as this facility concentrated on coinage for the Philippines and various foreign nations. This issue was widely hoarded by the roll when new, and gem specimens thus remain plentiful today. Few varieties of general interest are known for this coin, despite its high mintage.
