This year kicked off a period of relatively high sales for proof cents that lasted until 1890, when interest finally receded. Small hoards of this and other dates of the 1880s remained for decades, as a few coin dealers made a point of buying the unsold pieces at the end of each year. This date is relatively common in gem condition, though examples displaying any cameo contrast are very elusive. Two of the three obverse dies used for proof cents in 1879 reveal repunching of the date, but there seems to be little interest in collecting proofs by varieties.En savoir plus
