The 1858 gold dollar, with a mintage of nearly 118,000 pieces, is not rare in an absolute sense. Indeed, it is fairly available through MS62, but becomes scarcer in MS63 and near-Gem grades. Higher levels of preservation are considerably more difficult to acquire.
