Introduction des pièces de monnaie

The 1873 Philadelphia Mint standard dollar had a generous mintage by series standards, though it pales in comparison to Philly's output during the previous two years. Though still considered a common date, 1873(P) is less often seen than the preceding two issues and carries a modest premium. Mint State coins are disproportionately available when contrasted with the 1871 and 1872 entries. Whether or not this date was saved deliberately by collectors is not certain. It may be that a number of unissued 1873(P) dollars remained on hand when this coin type was rendered obsolete by law on April 1 of that year. Mint policy would have been to melt these coins, but there were always officers at that facility who would favor known numismatists whenever possible. Several gems and superb gems are known for this issue. Some Mint State survivors reveal semi-prooflike fields, though frosty texture is more often seen. While well struck coins are available, many examples are quite noticeably weak as compared to other dates. Circulated pieces are rather scarce below the grade of Very Fine, and the population of Details graded coins is nearly half that of those having Numeric grades. Four die marriages have been identified, resulting from combinations of three obverse dies and two reverses. These marriages vary in rarity, but without any interesting characteristics the demand is limited to series specialists.En savoir plus
