Collectors have recognized the 1927-D dime as a condition rarity for decades. While 1926-D, 1928-D and 1929-D dimes were available by the BU roll during the 1930s, this was never the case for 1927-D dimes, which seem to have entered circulation immediately. Even worn coins are less often seen than other Mercury Dimes of comparable mintage, and examples grading VF through AU are scarce. When a Mint State 1927-D is found, it is likely to be weakly struck at both centers and peripheries. The example illustrated, while highly lustrous, shows signs of the die erosion in its fields that is also common to this issue.
