The Philadelphia Mint struck almost 3.9 million $10 gold eagles in 1881. While many have survived in mint state, most of those examples are in MS63 or below. MS64 pieces are rare, and gem examples are nearly impossible to find. The proof issue for this year is exceptionally rare, with only 40 pieces originally minted.
