The popularity of collecting United States coins by date and mint emerged during the mid 1930s in response to the several very low mintage issues struck 1930-33 that had already gained premiums. Hoping for lightning to strike twice, speculators routinely saved fresh rolls of new coins for decades afterward. This has assured that a relatively low mintage coin such as the 1939-S quarter would remain plentiful in Mint State. Gems have been certified in quantity through MS 66. The one variety of note is a doubled-die obverse (DDO) evident in the date and motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Though minor in comparison to such varieties for several other dates, it is nonetheless quite collectable.
