The Philadelphia Mint struck a not insignificant 286,240 mint state gold quarter eagles in 1878. However, many were placed into circulation. While lower-end mint state coins are available, coins or higher in gem are extremely rare. Even though over a quarter of a million mint state quarter eagles were struck this year, the Mint only produced a mere 20 proofs.
