Though the production of half dimes for circulation at the Philadelphia Mint began to recover this year, the sales of silver proof sets were unaffected. The 600 sets sold for 1868 represent a typical figure for the period. Walter Breen reported that there are two die marriages of the 1868 proof half dime, but collecting such pieces by varieties is almost unknown. Collectors are more focused on the quality of individual specimens, and this date is rare in grades above PF 65.
