The 1885 half dollar falls into a pattern similar for the other "limited-edition" coins of 1879-90, yet it is noticeably more scarce at the Mint State level. In addition, fewer of the unworn survivors are gems. Worn examples are perhaps a little more available than those of 1884, 1886 and 1887, but they are less often seen than the other dates for the period. A single die pair was used for these currency strikes. Collars are known with either 152 or 156 reeds, but the Wiley-Bugert book doesn't specify whether they were exclusive to either proofs or circulating coins.En savoir plus
