Despite a generous mintage the 1900-S half dollar is scarce in problem-free Mint State grades. Gems are genuinely rare, though all MS coins seem to be well struck with good luster. David Lawrence noted that same example display parallel striations from the strip rolling process, and this can happen when the rollers or draw bench are worn. Circulated 1900-S halves are an interesting mix of rarities. Coins grading VG and lower are quite common, as it true for almost every entry in this series. The mid grades of F and VF are the toughest to locate, also a common trait of most Barber Halves. A few collectors were prescient enough to set aside newly minted examples at the time of issue, but all the remaining coins typically staid in circulation until the coin board craze of the mid-late 1930s. By that time, however, few Barber coins graded higher than VG, leaving a gap between these extremes. For most issues the XF and AU grades would likewise be scarce, but the 1900-S half dollar was one of three S-Mint pieces shipped to The Philippines as a transitional coinage between the old Spanish Imperial issues and the new USA-Philippines coinage of 1903-45. Though 1900-S halves grading XF and AU are thus plentiful, most must be Details graded for environmental damage or the harsh cleaning performed in an effort to salvage such pieces.
