Despite its similar mintage to that of the 1896(P) half dollar this issue is much more challenging to locate across all grades. Mint State survivors are genuinely rare. Like most New Orleans Mint coins of the period, the 1896-O half dollar typically weakly struck at the highest points of the design. This can throw off the grading of circulated examples.
