The 1905-O half dollar is among the more poorly made issues in the Barber series. Most examples are weakly struck and display mediocre luster. The "mumps" phenomenon is sometimes seen, as the obverse die sank at Liberty's portrait from improper heat treatment and die erosion. The number of Mint State survivors is relatively high for such a modest mintage, but gems are quite rare. Attractive circulated examples are elusive in grades above Very Good. David Lawrence described this coin's mintmark as "wide open," but it's unlikely that a different punch was used. A more plausible explanation is that the punch was applied shallowly, and the shoulders of the punch thus didn't fill in its center.En savoir plus
