This date is quite popular with both date and type collectors, as it represents the final emission of Seated Liberty Dollars and also makes a nice transitional companion to the new Trade Dollar introduced in 1873. There are also collectors who seek to replicate the set assembled by "Mr. 1873," Harry X Boosel, who studied all the major varieties of this date across the many denominations from cent through double eagle. His articles ran serially in a monthly periodical and were later published as a stand-alone monograph. The population data reveal that this issue is slightly more scarce than other issues of the "With Motto" subtype from 1866-73. Indeed, Osburn and Cushing pegged the estimated population at just 360 pieces across all grades. As always, Ultra Cameo specimens are quite rare, especially at the gem level. Like the proof silver dollars of 1872, the 1873 emission was produced from just a single pair of dies. The reverse was a holdover from the previous year.続きを読む
