The 1925-S dime is a key entry in the Mercury series, and it just edges out 1925-D as the most poorly made one, too. All seen have been deficient in some respect, regardless of the grade assigned. Since no 1925 dimes of any mint are fully struck on the obverse, it's likely that the master die was not properly hubbed for that year (A similar problem is found on 1925 nickels of all mints, which never have fully formed dates). In the case of 1925-S dimes, there exists a perfect storm of quality issues, with many coins having been struck from severely worn dies revealing heavy erosion at their peripheries, as well as central weakness. Collectors building sets from circulation during the 1940s-50s seemingly hoarded all 1925-S dimes they encountered, as the magical S mintmark was routinely associated with scarcity. Well worn examples are thus plentiful, and this issue is not rare below the grade of XF. Mint State survivors are in very limited supply, and even those having Full Bands will likely be weakly struck in one or more other design features.続きを読む
