The production of coins slowed considerably in 1930, due to the effects of the Great Depression. Many 1930-S dimes remained in vaults for a few years until the demand for fresh coin reappeared in 1934-35. By this time collectors were already alerted to this low mintage issue and preserved a fair number of Mint State pieces. 1930-S dimes are scarce in the higher circulated grades, but Mint State survivors are more plentiful than they would have been under normal economic conditions, and this holds down the value of worn pieces.
