The final delivery of dimes for 1840 was made in 1840, and these featured an extensively revised interpretation of the Seated Liberty figure by Robert Ball Hughes. The one change that most stands out on casual observation is the addition of a thick drapery fold at Liberty's left elbow. Another important change was the addition of obverse stars to the new master hub, as the Engraving Department no longer had to add these tedious elements by hand to each working die. The reverse was modified only slightly, the most obvious difference being that the buds on the wreath are henceforth open rather than closed. Not surprisingly, given its smaller mintage, this subtype of the 1840 Philadelphia Mint dime is far more scarce than the No Drapery coins. This is especially true of Mint State examples, with gems being all but unknown.続きを読む
