In this odd variety, letters UNI of UNITED are seen within the value statement, though they fade in a later die state. Since the letters are raised on the coins they must have been punched into the die, rather than resulting from a clash situation. Another, remote possibility is that the die was damaged by striking an already struck coin out of rotation.
