The large mintages typical for proof minor coins during the 1880s certainly applied to this date, and examples are fairly plentiful across most grades. Gems are in good supply, and Cameo proofs also exist in collectable numbers. Proofs of this date were generally well made, though the example illustrated reveals the same weakness at the corn cob so often seen on currency strikes. This design element is directly opposite the deepest part of the die cavity on the obverse, and this led to incomplete filling of the dies. The coin above also shows obvious repunching of the date. This variety is not rare, constituting perhaps a third of the known proofs, but it's sufficiently appealing to command a premium. This die was later used to coin currency pieces, as well.続きを読む
