The term Large Stars is misleading, as this is actually the one and only normal size for the obverse stars. An explanation of the "Small Stars" variety will be found in the following entry. This issue had a very generous mintage for its time, and Mint State survivors are plentiful. Even gems are not particularly rare, though they are in great demand from both type collectors and half dime specialists. Most Mint State pieces were well struck, though die clash impressions are common, as well as deterioration of the dies, which is most visible in the form of blurry denticles. The master hub for this coin type did not include stars until 1840, so these elements had to be punched by hand into each working die. Thus, their exact positions will vary slightly, and some will show repunching. These variations are not widely collected.続きを読む
