Some 960 proof half dimes were coined in 1871 for inclusion in the silver proof sets of that year. Walter Breen speculated that an unknown number of these were melted in 1873 after the denomination became obsolete, but this seems unlikely. Proofs of the early 1870s typically have clumsily polished fields that reveal curvature that in previous decades would have been completely flat surfaces.
