In the recession year of 1921 the San Francisco Mint produced more than twice as many half dollars as its Philadelphia and Denver cousins. This is testimony to the great utility of half dollars in the western states, where silver dollars likewise reigned supreme in commerce. Indeed, it was the San Francisco Mint alone that produced additional half dollars for circulation sporadically during the 1920s, while the other mints suspended such activity until 1929 (Denver) and 1934 (Philadelphia). Though the most available of the low-mintage 1921 halves in the lower circulated grades, the 1921-S issue surpasses the other two in rarity in grades XF and higher. The population of Mint State pieces is quite low, with gems being exceedingly rare. Most 1921-S half dollars display poor strikes to varying degrees, adding further to the difficulty of finding superior coins.続きを読む
