The proof coins struck 1896-1901 are notable for having a greater degree of contrast between brilliant fields and frosted devices than for the years immediately preceding and following. These often make ideal type coins. The 1897 proof half dollar is available at the gem level, though the numbers drop off rapidly when one views the certified populations of Cameo and Ultra Cameo pieces.
