The minting of silver dollars during 1802 was greatly reduced from the high numbers of 1798-1800, since the coins then contained more than a dollar's worth of silver. The number of newly-minted pieces that were shipped overseas to be traded at their bullion value is unknown, but the attrition rate was fairly high. While 1802 is certainly not a rare issue, the number of surviving pieces is proportionally lower than for those high mintage years. A handful of Mint State coins are available to the well-heeled collector, but most examples grade Fine or Very Fine, reflecting some limited circulation. Of the seven die marriages for 1802 silver dollars, four are overdates that are treated in a separate entry following this one. The remaining two include the common BB-241 and the very scarce BB-242. The number of collectors seeking this series by die marriages is limited, but the latter coin will bring a premium. It's likely that many of these non-overdate 1802 dollars were coined during the following calendar year.
