The high mintage for this date is quite misleading, and it is probably twice the number of dimes which were struck with the 1836 date. A study of emission sequences for the various dies used for 1835 and 1836 dimes proves that many of the 1835-dated pieces came after the first striking of 1836-dated dimes. Only three each of obverse and reverse dies are known for this date. These were paired as 1-A, 2-B and 3-C, with no sharing of dies for 1836-dated dimes. Though not so noted in popular catalogs, each obverse die is distinctive---one has a Script 8, another has a Block 8, and still another has a Script 8 punched over a Block 8! Of these varieties, JR-2 is common and the others only slightly scarce. As noted above, this date is more scarce than its published mintage suggests, though certainly not rare. Mint State pieces exist in smaller numbers than for the common 1833-35 dimes.続きを読む
