Another high mintage issue, the 1940-D cent is common across all grades, and most pieces were quite well made. Mintages rose rapidly starting in 1940 and peaked in 1944. This story was news at the time: "Mrs. Nellie Tayloe Ross, Director of the Mint, said that an increased demand for coins has forced operation of the Philadelphia and Denver Mints on twenty-four hour schedules, and the one at San Francisco on sixteen hours daily.
