The San Francisco Mint struck coins only during the first three months of 1955, when this activity was suspended for an entire decade. It was found to be more cost effective to make additional coins at Denver and ship them west than to strike them at the small and inadequate San Francisco facility. Though die erosion is a factor with 1955-S cents, they were generally of better quality than those from Philly and Denver. This fact, combined with absolutely massive hoarding of this final S-Mint cent, has given the hobby a large pool of high grade survivors. A small number of repunched mintmark varieties are known for this relatively small mintage, but only one of these has much popularity. It is distinctive for its triple-punched S.続きを読む
