硬幣介紹
Production at the San Francisco Mint rose dramatically for 1940. More than three times as many quarter dollars were coined that year as compared to 1939. Quality began to suffer as a result, with many 1940-S quarters revealing worn dies with heavy erosion lines. To continue using such dies, workers repolished them aggresively, and this led to distorted or missing details and, occasionally, random polishing lines that appear raised on the coins. This polishing sometimes led to areas of semi-prooflike fields. Aside from technical flaws and carefully die preparation, Mint State 1940-S quarters survive in large numbers, and gems are plentiful through MS 66. Examples grading MS 67 also are available to advanced collectors. Only minor varieties are known, but one die pair combines a doubled obverse with a repunched mintmark.閱讀更多
