First struck in 1986, Gold Eagles are one of the world's most popular ways to buy gold. The coins are available in 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 1oz sizes, with face values of $5, $10, $25, and $50, respectively. The mintage of proof $10 gold eagles dropped by some 43,858 pieces to just over 54,000 coins in 1989. Quality was similar to the price year, with just over a third earning the grade PF70UC.
