Introduction of Coins
The Philadelphia Mint found it less troublesome to overproduce proofs at the beginning of the year and destroy or release the unsold pieces than to come up short and have to strike more later in the year. Walter Breen estimated that as many as 600 proof 1861 cents remained unsold and were disposed of at the end of the year. The quality of most survivors is somewhat disappointing, having the same problems of incomplete strike and less than brilliant fields seen on the 1860 proofs.Read More
