The Oak Wreath reverse debuted on this year's cents, but there's no evidence that collectors sought extra examples because of the change. Indeed, of the estimated 1,000 proofs coined, over 450 were reportedly dumped into circulation as ordinary currency when sales failed to materialize. Indian Cent specialist Rick Snow reported in his Guide Book on this series that the proofs of 1860 were poorly made, with incomplete strikes and little or no cameo contrast.Read More
