Introduction of Coins
The quality of 1874 proof cents is slightly superior to that of the dates immediately preceding, but none of the U. S. Mint's proof coins from the 1870s were made with the same care as those of the previous decade. As is true of most early Indian Head proofs, both fully red and cameo pieces are quite rare. What Walter Breen described as a repunched 4 on some proofs is actually a flaw in the numeral punch, and it is characteristic of all proofs for this date. The reverse die which debuted in 1872, with its oddly bold right pendant to the T in CENT, was used again for the 1874 proofs.Read More
