Introduction of Coins
For the first time since its formal sales of proof coins began in 1858, the U. S. Mint reported all sales of proof minor coins, including those sold outside of the silver sets. Thus we have what seems like a sudden jump in proof cent production, but this year's figure is probably typical for those of the several years preceding. As the Census Report reveals, 1878 proof cents are more readily available in gem condition with full red color and/or cameo contrast that other dates of this period.Read More
