Introduction of Coins
The coin collecting hobby experienced a growth spurt during the late 1870s and early 1880s. This perhaps accounts for the large numbers of proof cents coined during the '80s, but it seems to have been excessive even for that time. Decades later, several dealers had hoards of these dates from having bought up the unsold remainders each year.
