Introduction of Coins
The extraordinarily high sales of proof cents this year is an anomaly that can be explained by the fact that this denomination was available only by purchasing the silver or minor proof sets. With three types of five-cent pieces in 1883, the sale of minor sets was very high, as collectors sought completion. Perhaps this glut of unwanted proof cents led to their neglect, as gems are certainly not common, despite the great number issued. Cameo examples are also quite rare.Read More
