Introduction of Coins
The figure of 800 proofs is merely an estimation, and the surviving population is clearly lower. The records of proof minor coin sales before 1878 were destroyed in 1925, and researchers have had to reconstruct this information. Extremely popular as the only date in the series having this first style of wreath, the proof 1859 cent is more expensive than its actual rarity would otherwise warrant. Most examples are well made, with bright fields and some degree of cameo contrast, but all too many suffer from the spotting evident in the examples illustrated.Read More
