Introduction of Coins
The Silver Eagle turned 24 in 2009. This year's mintage surpassed even the record 2008 mintage with over 30 million coins issued. The financial crisis in the United States in 2008 clearly led people to invest in metals, which apparently caught the Mint off guard. In order to produce so many bullion pieces this year, the Mint ruined many collectors' sets by neglecting to issue either a proof or a Burnished Silver Eagle for 2009. Quality also suffered, with only around 7% grading MS70. (7/2015)Read More
