Introduction of Coins
Though not a large mintage when compared to the production of half dollars during the 1840s, the figure for 1847 silver dollars is generous within this series. As a result, this issue is among the most often seen of the "No Motto" Seated Liberty Dollars. It's readily available in all circulated grades, and the number of Mint State pieces certified is higher than for all but a few dates of this type. Two obverse dies were paired with four reverse dies, one of them used previously during 1846, for a combination of four die marriages. None of the dies bear interesting features, so there is extremely little demand for the particular varieties. The 1847 dollar may be found well struck, but most reveal some weakness in the usual trouble spots. Semi-prooflike examples may be found with careful searching, but most were coined from moderately worn dies that produced textured luster.Read More
