Introduction of Coins
The general availability of this issue belies its modest mintage. The 1849 silver dollar is easily found in all circulated grades and in the lower grades of Mint State. Choice examples may be had through MS 64, but the population drops offs rapidly above that level. Fewer than half a dozen gems have been certified. This date is also better struck as a rule than most of the preceding dates and makes for a nice type coin. A single obverse die was paired with two reverses, one of them used previously for 1848's production. In the absence of any eye-catching features, these varieties are of interest solely to specialists. OC-1 is more common than OC-2, but no premium has emerged for the latter.Read More
