Introduction of Coins
The silver dollars coined at the New Orleans Mint in 1850 were widely circulated, with a result that Mint State survivors are quite rare, gems unknown. Unlike Philadelphia Mint silver dollars of the 1850s, 1850-O is often found quite worn. As noted for 1846-O, southerners truly embraced the silver dollar and used it readily. It's no surprise that just a single die pair was used for this production, which could have been completed in a single day. Unworn examples usually have semi-prooflike fields, but a few frosty coins are known, as well. The typical 1850-O dollar is better struck than most dates in this series and is a good candidate for one's type set.Read More
