Introduction of Coins

The non-proof silver dollars of 1852 have much in common with those of 1851, but this date is somewhat more rare. As with the previous year, most survivors are Mint State or close to it, as their bullion value exceed their face value when struck and for some years thereafter. This prevented them from circulating freely, and it's supposed that this token quantity was produced to balance the accounts of those depositing bullion at the mint. A single die marriage has been confirmed for 1852 non-proofs, though a second may exist that paired the same obverse with the venerable Reverse A of 1848 used in each of the preceding four years. In their definitive book on this series, co-authors Osburn and Cushing explained that such a coin was reported as a proof, but added that this die pairing would more likely have been used for currency pieces. Confusing MS and PF coins is possible with this date, as the small circulating mintage was not sufficient for the die fields to lose their initial polish. 1852 tend to display some weakness at the obverse upper stars and atop the eagle's right wing, but collectors cannot be picky when attempting to locate one of the very rare non-proofs dollars of this year.Read More
